FotogrAffi: Canon and its great temptations!

Now anyone who knows me knows I’m a Canon junkie. Sorry my Nikon friends! It’s just the way it is. My late uncle who was also a photographer introduced me to Canon when I was about 10 years old and since then I’ve just always gravitated toward the Canon brand. I’m also a marketer so I’m really all about brands. Anyway, a few days ago Canon announced the latest additions to its renowned L-series professional lens portfolio. Now, although these lenses have me drooling, and I can’t wait to try them out, I won’t be buying them anytime soon. As a photographer it is very easy to get caught up purchasing any and every piece of equipment that is out there or that you see other photogs toting around, but then end up not using them often enough to get your money’s worth. What you carry in your bag as a photographer should really reflect your photography focus – as I am learning – which is why I have off-loaded a number of items on eBay. Anyway, back to Canon…. without much ado, here are their new releases and all I can say is “Yum”!

Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM zoom lens

The EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM features a high-grade physical design that allows continued shooting in the harshest weather conditions.  It is also the first fisheye zoom lens offering both circular and full frame images, thanks to an extreme wide-angle focal range of 8-15mm.  This lens provides enhanced creative flexibility when shooting scenes such as the night sky, where the full 180º horizontal and vertical fields of view (FOV) allowing every detail to be captured with incredible clarity in one single image.

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM offers a 4.3x telephoto zoom range of 70-300mm, with a variable aperture of f/4-5.6.  Apparently its impressive focal range and travel-friendly size, makes this lens ideally suited to professionals and advanced amateur photographers wishing to capture portraits, nature and action shots in superb detail.

Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM

Both of the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM models will appeal to nature, wildlife and sports photographers. Each features a completely redesigned optical system and the latest iteration of Canon’s original Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, and their all-new magnesium alloy construction and titanium components ensure the designs are both more robust and lightweight than their predecessors.

Canon is also releasing two new extenders – the EF 1.4X III and the EF 2X III to go with these lenses.  Again, “Yum”!

Journalism: Shooting a cultural festival

Cultural festivals can be a photographer’s dream. Exploring cultural festivals in foreign lands can easily become overwhelming with the sights, the sounds, the activity and the people – there is just so much going on and so much to capture.  Then there is the personal debate of what to work with. Telephoto? Primes? Super wide angles? One body or two? While trying to think through what piece of equipment to use to get that shot, even the most experienced photographer could easily miss 10 others. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow and shoot with whatever is in your hand and these days that can easily include a mobile phone.  I recently attended the Osun Osogbo festival which was a fantastic opportunity for me to do some photo journalism work.  Since I decided to carry only one body with me on this expedition, I spent plenty of time contemplating what lens I was going to use at any given moment.  That part was frustrating, but the rest was amazing to experience as well as in some cases, completely crazy. I’ll be sharing more images from the festival and will share more about the experience in a few upcoming posts.

Travel: Scenes from Playa and Isla Mujeres, Q’Roo MEXICO!

It’s August and as I stepped onto the tarmac in Frankfurt I could feel that bit of Autumn crispness in the air.  Just a sign that many Summer vacations are wrapping up and the ‘holidays’ are heading our way. Geez!  Anyway, speaking of vacations, I just returned from my wedcation in Playa Mujeres in Mexico.  Playa is about 30 mins North of Cancun and is a quietly tucked away from the tourist madness while also being close enough for you to enjoy it, should the need arise.  It was an amazing time as I spent five great days with 85 of our family and friends.  I shot all these images with my Canon 16-35 mm f/2.8L lens as I wanted to challenge myself by using one lens I don’t use as much as I should.  Here are a few shots from my trip…

FotogrAffi: Lolade Cameron-Cole Photography

What do photographers do when they get together?  They talk bodies, lenses, accessories, lighting, shoots, clients and projects. Basically that’s what we do, as much as we might try to talk about all else that’s going on in the world it always comes back to F-stops and shutter speeds.  While visiting a fellow friend and photographer – the amazing Lolade Cameron-Cole (aka the Barefoot photographer) – we decided to head into her back yard to take a few test shots. Her adorable son Mr. T (an up and coming American football player) joined us for a few poses. Now I would have posted the link to LCC’s photography website {here}, but I’m still working on getting her to get her work online. Hmm….! Tick tock, tick tock. LOL!

FotogrAffi: Kids at play

While visiting a friend recently, I caught these two munchkins at play.  As soon as I asked if they’d like their photo taken they got so excited. It was quite funny how Ibrahim rushed to help his sister Ama, put on her shoes before posing for the camera. Too cute!
